Dear Students, Teacher, Engineer Mentors and Volunteers of New Orleans area:
Welcome to the exciting competition of Future City. So what is Future City Competition about? and how does it affect the students? the community? Let me introduce you to some of the comments made by teachers who have participated in this competition earlier:
|
“The kids learn a lot from the program, especially that there are standards that they have to follow in order to do a quality, first-rate job.”
“They’re learning that as soon as you solve one problem, you run into another, and that all the things it takes to run a city are interrelated.”
“The kids learn how to manage their time, meet deadlines, compromise and, most importantly, make decisions together. They see the results of their efforts. These are essential life skills.”
The Future City Competition allows students to:
Work as a team under the guidance of a teacher and a practicing engineer mentor
Use a popular award-winning computer game, SimCity 3000 to design their future city.
Build a scale model of a section of their city.
Utilize their communication skills by preparing an abstract, an essay, and a verbal presentation relating their experience in the design of their city
A handful of schools from Greater New Orleans Area have been participating in Louisiana Regional Competition for the last couple of years. This year our plans are to grow - promote this interesting event locally - Generate interest amongst the schools, Engineering communities - and increase the level of participation by 300%.
And this will not be possible without your help and cooperation
We need to spread the word around to as many schools as we can and generate interest about the competition.
We need Engineer mentor volunteers who will advise students about engineering concepts.
We need volunteers for the Future City Steering Committee which will coordinate the competition in future years.
We need volunteers who can help promote the competition amongst the local Engineering societies and Engineering companies - and solicit for funding / donations.
There are a lot of ways you can help promote this exciting event in our schools and community. Please feel free to contact us for more information. We are looking forward to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Ani Chitambar
