Useful Information

Members will find the information below extremely useful.  Please take advantage of these benefits that the IEEE gives its members.

Keeping your Contact Information Up To Date - Information for New Orleans Section Members

As IEEE and the New Orleans Section move increasingly to electronic communication, it is important that your e-mail address and other contact information be correct.  The Section receives information about its members from IEEE headquarters, so if their information is incorrect, your Section Bits and other e-mail may not be delivered properly.  To check or change your e-mail or other contact information, go to

UPDATE YOUR MEMBERSHIP ONLINE

This will direct you to a page that will allow you to edit this directly if you have an IEEE Web account (or allow you to obtain an account, if you do not have one).  It also contains the Member Services telephone number, 1-800-678-4333.

IEEE also provides a valuable IEEE e-mail alias service free to members.  The alias is an e-mail redirector, which forwards e-mail addressed to your IEEE account to any other e-mail account you desire.  The IEEE alias has several advantages.  Your IEEE alias never changes as long as you remain in IEEE.  This means that if you change e-mail addresses, you simply redesignate the alias destination account; you never need to notify people who use the alias that the account has changed.  Also, IEEE maintains a sophisticated and up-to-date virus checking service, which scans forwarded e-mail for malicious attachments and removes them, notifying you of what was done.  If you do not have an IEEE alias and want to apply for one, go to

http://eleccomm.ieee.org/

Applying for Senior Membership in IEEE - Information for New Orleans Section Members

Are you qualified to be a Senior Member of the IEEE?  If so, you should be recognized for your accomplishments and apply for elevation to Senior Member grade.  Only about 7% of IEEE members hold this higher grade, and therefore it is a significant distinction.  The requirements are not overly stringent:  To qualify for Senior Membership, "… a candidate shall be an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive or originator in IEEE-designated fields. The candidate shall have been in professional practice for at least ten years and shall have shown significant performance over a period of at least five of those years." (from the SM application).  Senior Members are entitled to identify themselves as such.  In addition, they receive a very nice plaque from IEEE recognizing their accomplishment and, if they wish, IEEE will send a letter to their employer noting their elevation in grade.

To apply for Senior Membership on the Web, go to

http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/md/smguide.html#Applicant_guide

which will lead you through the process.  The New Orleans Section is eager to be the Entity Nominator for Section members who qualify.  Please send e-mail to the Section Chair, Dr. Edit Bourgeois, at section-chair@ieee-neworleans.org before submitting the application, if you want the Section to support your application or act as nominator.  If you don’t have Web access, you can contact Member Services at 1-800-678-IEEE (4333) for a Senior Member application kit and call Dr. Bourgeois at 504-280-5616.  You will also need three recommendations from Senior Member or Fellow grade IEEE members.  If you are having trouble finding these, please contact any member of the Executive Committee, and we will gladly help you find the necessary people.  If you have any questions on the procedure, feel free to contact any Ex-Com member for help.

If you have reached this level of distinction in your career, you should be recognized for it.  Apply for Senior Membership today!
